Exposing a terrible copy coach
I’m DYING to name names here… because this is bad.
But… I’ll refrain from doing so.
(I’m not the type to call people out and start a load of drama)
You’re just gonna have to keep your wits about you — and for Heaven’s sake, do your due diligence — if you’re ever in the market for a coach.
That said, here’s the rub:
A couple of days ago…
A copywriter booked a Retainer Client Strategy Session with me to join the Flaming Camel…
During which he shared some, uh, ‘insight’ into another copywriting coach he’d been learning from.
And yes -
I’m being extremely liberal with my definition of the word “learning”
This coach was teaching blast cold email (100+ per day) using generic, fill-in-the-blank templates.
Ya know, playing a pure volume game… machine-gunning ’em out like an annoying, spammy Rambo.
(Sidenote — I’m shocked people are still teaching and doing this…)
That alone is pretty sucky.
But it gets a LOT worse.
Because when this copywriter asked for help and support (cos’ he wasn’t getting any results)…
Here’s what the coach told him:
“Your template is bad”
“You know, that COPY AND PASTE template I gave you.
The fill-in-the-blank one.
Yeah. It’s bad.
That’s why you’re failing.”
Yeah makes sense…
But hey — this copywriter isn’t one to give in easily. So he took the hypocrisy on the chin and ploughed onwards.
And to his credit, the coach gave SOME feedback on what tweaks to make.
After a few weeks of spraying and praying with this “new” script…
It STILL didn’t work.
So, with gritted teeth and bloodshot eyes, the copywriter returned to the coach for help.
What glorious advice does he receive this time?
“You haven’t qualified the prospects”
“You know, that thing I NEVER told you to do or even so much as MENTIONED up until this point.
Yeah — you’ve gotta do it to make this work.
So like before…
The copywriter sucked it up…
Squeezed his stress ball this time…
And started qualifying his leads the way the coach suggested.
(Which, by the way, was HORRIBLE — it involved a time-sucking and bang-your-head-against-the-wall-because-you-can’t-find-this-info-easily combination of ranking his leads by employee numbers, how long they’ve been in business, how much turnover they have (which is almost always a bad estimate until you talk to them… etc.)
500 years later…
Our long-suffering copywriter now had his ‘qualified’ list of prospects to send his tweaked script to.
It STILL didn’t work.
So, after screaming into a pillow…
Chucking his now destroyed stress ball into the bin…
Taking a few deep, yet shaky breaths to calm down…
The copywriter returned for advice, ONE LAST TIME, really at the end of his rope by now.
And shock horror…
His coach offered nothing but the equivalent of a fat middle finger to the face:
“You need to buy a different prospecting list from Upwork or use [insert dodgy data-mining website here]”
W H A T ? ? ?
“You know, that list you spent half your life qualifying…
Yeah, screw that.
Instead, you need to head to Upwork and ask a “professional” to build a new list, crossing your fingers that they won’t sell the EXACT same list to everyone and their dog.
Or, failing that…
Turn to the slimy world of underground data-mining and get a list of business leads from there…
Using your credit card in the same way that the army sends robots into the field to diffuse a bomb.
There’s a high chance you’ll get hacked, or scammed, or have some other bad sh*t happen, but hey, that’s business, baby.”
That was the final straw for our copywriting hero…
And he left that program, clinging on for dear life to the morsel of sanity he had left.
If you ever wonder why I CONSTANTLY scream about the results, case studies, endorsements, etc. that I, as a coach, get from people…
This is why.
I wanna do everything I can to separate myself from the terrible coaches in this industry.
(The copywriter in question recently entered the safe confines of the Flaming Camel because of that)
I mean… in just the last couple weeks…
I’ve had students in BOTH my programs book calls, close new retainer deals, and tighten their copy to generate huge ROIs for their clients.
Proof is plastered all over my social media profiles, so check them out if you wanna see it for yourself.
(I’m not hard to find… there aren’t many ‘Shiv Shetti’s in the world haha)
But the bottom line is this:
If you’re after $5k+ retainer deals with career-defining clients…
(i.e. the Flaming Camel)
Rest assured that everything I do is backed up with a proven track-record, and many happy students.
And perhaps more importantly…
My processes (i.e. ways of doing things) are all CLEARLY laid out up-front.
That means you won’t EVER be slapped with nasty “surprises” like the coach I exposed above.
(Another benefit of making you book a call before you join either program — you can ask me as many questions as you like, to make SURE it’s right for you)
Alrighty, this post is long enough.
So everything being said…
If you’re keen to discover how I do things differently in the Flaming Camel…
And you’re interested in having me in your corner — a coach who actually knows what the hell he’s doing — as you scale your copywriting business…
And whatever you decide to do…
Be REAL careful about who you trust in this industry!
